Romania’s national champion in the 48-kilogram category has been suspended by the International Weightlifting Federation for a period of four years.
The 16-year-old Alina-Alexandra Popovici tested positive for the anabolic steroid Stanozolol in an out-of-competition test. A member of the Botosani Sporting Club, Popovici tested positive after she won the national title this year.
The Ukrainian weightlifter Yuliya Kalina was also suspended for two years for doping. The bronze medalist from the 2012 Olympics was recently stripped of her medal after she tested positive for doping. Kalina has been ordered to return her 2012 Olympic bronze medal after she tested positive for banned substance Turinabol. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday disqualified her result from the 58-kilogram weightlifting event in London.
In May, the IOC disclosed that 23 athletes from the London Games have tested positive for banned substances following sample reanalysis.
The International Weightlifting Federation also announced suspension of Malvina Soledad Veron of Argentina, Sergei Dolgalev of Kyrgyzstan, Moises Cartagena of Puerto Rico. and Adham Badr Masood Marzoq of Yemen.
