We all know that testosterone is mainly found in male, and is the principal sex hormone that helps in the growth and development of secondary sexual characteristics.
Male sex hormones are collectively known as “androgens”. Among these hormones, testosterone is the most active and predominant.
Testosterone is the distributed throughout the body by blood. It contributes to muscle growth, facial hair growth, deepening of the voice and is essential to sexual activity.
Testosterone is also present in women in small amounts. It regulates a woman’s libido and plays a role in bone strength.
Testosterone is now manufactured synthetically nowadays. Athletes and bodybuilders usually take testosterone or anabolic steroids to gain advantage in their performance in sports. High levels of testosterone promote aggressiveness and competitiveness. It also results in risk taking behavior and dominance behavior in males.
A healthy amount of sexual activity suggests that you have a normal testosterone level. Therefore, excessive testosterone levels would probably lead to increase in libido. It remains a debatable issue whether sex has a significant effect on an athlete’s performance. It is difficult to determine if the hormone increase is the consequence or the reason for our sexual behavior.
From The Times of India:
The ‘steroids’ most people refer to when discussing athletes and bodybuilders using them to gain unfair advantage are anabolic steroids. These steroids, including testosterone, are banned in virtually every regulated sport. Intake in large doses — orally, by injection or through gel and skin patches — stimulates better protein synthesis in cells and leads to greater muscle mass and dramatic increases in stamina, the reason why many athletes are tempted to use them.
