According to reports, a mystery witness, who had firsthand experience in taking nutritional supplements contaminated with steroids, will attend the senate hearing, entitled “Bodybuilding Products and Hidden Steroids: Enforcement Barriers”.
He will allegedly sit behind Travis Tygart, chief executive of US Anti-Doping Agency.
Although the mystery witness was not included in the initial list of witnesses, Senators could call upon him to answer questions.
Aside from the two, several FDA and DEA top officials and lawyers are expected to testify during the hearing.
Tygart believes that people should see a living example of a person injured by these nutritional supplements. Tygart added that people should realize how unfortunate it is for a person to take a supplement he expects to help him in maintaining wellness, only to land in the hospital after a few weeks of using the product.
Just last week, Bodybuilding.com’s warehouse and headquarters was raided by FDA authorities. This week, the Drug Enforcement Administration is currently investigating on another supplement company. Ergonopharm is the distributor of 6-OXO supplement. The supplement was taken by Philadelphia Phillies reliever JC Romero. It was alleged that the supplement triggered Romero’s positive drug test results, which led to his 50-game suspension.
From New York Daily News:
A Senate hearing Tuesday examining the loopholes that have allowed the routine marketing and selling of anabolic steroids under the guise of nutritional supplementation will feature a mystery witness whose medical history could put a human face on the physical destruction such substances can cause.
