Indian goalkeeper Subrata Paul has asked the Indian National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) to impose a provisional suspension on himself.

The goalkeeper had failed a dope test conducted by NADA when the men’s football team of India was going to Cambodia for a friendly match earlier this year. Paul applied for a voluntary suspension after exit of his team from the Federation Cup tournament for his club DSK Shivajians in Cuttack.

“Paul opted for voluntary (provisional) suspension. So, he stands suspended,” said NADA director general Navin Agarwal.

Subrata Paul tested positive for Terbutaline but he was allowed to play for DSK Shivajians in the Federation Cup since Terbutaline was a “specified substance”. It is believed that the substance was consumed by Paul through a cough syrup that Paul has been taking to cope with a bronchial problem

A specified substance, according to rules of the World Anti-Doping Agency, is one which allows, under defined conditions, for a greater reduction of a sanction of two years when an athlete tests positive for that particular substance. The aim is to identify that it is possible for a substance to enter the body of an athlete inadvertently and allows more flexibility to the tribunal when making a decision.

Paul refused to undergo a ‘B’ sample test in May as he would have faced a ban of four years if his ‘B’ sample Test had also returned positive. He has pleaded not guilty and said that he will prove his innocence.

Paul, who made his debut in 2007, has won Nehru Cup twice (2007, 2009) and the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) Challenge Cup in 2008. Nicknamed ‘Spiderman’, Paul has made a total of 60 appearances for the national team till date.
