In the last tow years or so, many Dominican prospects have been reported for testing positive for steroids and getting a two-year suspension.
Recently a Dominican prospect allegedly known as Damian Arredondo was banned from playing for the league for 50 games. Arredondo tested positive for stanozolol metabolite, an anabolic steroid derived from testosterone.
Stanozolol is one of the most common anabolic steroids and is banned in sports competition by the IAAF and many other sporting bodies.
Furthermore, the league discovered that this prospect’s real name is not Damian Arredondo. DNA results showed that he also misrepresented his age.
In July 2009, the Yankees signed him up on an $850,000 contract. He claimed that he was only 16-years old and that his real name was Damian Arredondo.
The deal was later cancelled that month after DNA and anti-doping results came out.
The shortstop cannot sign with another Major League team for a year. If ever he signs a new contract with a Major League team, he will have to serve a 50-game suspension due to his positive steroid test.
Major League Baseball’s spokesperson declined to comment when asked if the player’s real identity was already known.
From The New York Times:
The Yankees believed that was his name when they signed him as a 16-year-old in July — before his DNA was checked and he was tested for performance-enhancing drugs.
