Big Pocono Little League wins national safety awardThe Big Pocono Little League based in Tannersville and Reeders was recently honored during the annual Little League World Series in Williamsport.

The Little League judged the team as having the most outstanding safety awareness program. The league received a set of field lights with a reported value of $100,000. According to Mark Nayman, president of the Big Pocono Little League, the lights would be able to help them host more tournaments with night games. An Iowa-based company will be installing the field lights. They are currently conducting a survey of the league’s baseball field to determine the best way and the best place to install the lights.

Little League Baseball developed ASAP, “A Safety Awareness Program” to keep their athletes safe from injuries rather than waiting for injuries to happen before taking action. As part of their program, the league required Little League teams around the country to create and implement a safety plan. The winner of the regional safety plan competition will also receive $500 credit for its league insurance cost.

At Big Pocono, safety officers included CPR Training, defibrillators at each field and an educational program regarding the dangers of steroids use.

From Pocono Record:

Dr. Tom Gioglio, the athletic director at ESU, came out and did a great presentation with his staff during our ‘Safety Day‘ about how dangerous steroids are for the kids,” Nayman said. “You should have seen the way the kids took to this program. They were really interested.”
