Australian Rugby player facing steroids chargesNewcastle Waratahs club player, Luke Troy, faces steroid charges and has been banned from playing sport until May 5, 2011.

Troy was caught ordering two separate types of steroids supplements over the internet in 2006. He was caught due to the collaboration of two Australian agencies, the Customs and the Sports Anti-doping Authority.

Troy was initially cleared by the Australian Rugby Union since he never got hold of the drugs. It was also not proven that the two packages received by Troy were indeed steroids.

Although Customs had intercepted one package addressed to Troy from United Kingdom in February of 2006, it was not established if the sealed container labeled “21 packets of testosterone-1” indeed contained the actual substance.

Customs seized the second package in August 2006. This time, the package was from United States and still addressed to Troy. The label stated “one bottle x 100 capsules of DHEA containing 200 mg dehydroepiandrosterone per capsule.’’ Again, it was not proven if the contents are indeed, what the packaging said they were.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) found Troy guilty of attempting to use a prohibited substance, which is one of the anti-doping violations set by the law. CAS said that it does not matter if the packages contained prohibited substances or not.

From Brisbane Times:

AUSTRALIAN club rugby prop Luke Troy is set to become well known in international sporting circles, not for his journeyman playing skills but for the circumstances surrounding a steroid-related two-year ban.
