Hysen Pulaku, a weightlifter from Albania, was banned after failing to clear a drug test to become the first athlete to be sanctioned for doping during the London Games, according to the International Olympic Committee.

The athlete tested positive for the substance stanozolol, a steroid, in two different urine samples, according to a report by the IOC. The report stated that the weightlifter said in a hearing that he was not aware he had taken a banned substance but voluntarily disclosed he had been using many vitamins and dietary supplements during his training, given to him by his private coach.

The IOC said, neither the athlete nor his personal coach contests the test result.

According to an IOC spokeswoman, Pulaku was selected as part of random, out-of-competition testing and he provided urine samples on July 23, which were analyzed separately on different days and both returned positive tests.

The weightlifting sports federation was supposed to “deliver the right information and to know about the athletes,” said Klinton Muca, deputy chef de mission of the Albanian Olympic team.

The Albanian national organizing committee accepts the IOC’s decision, Muca said. “There are good athletes, and fair [ones] who are doing a clean sport,” he said. “We are sorry for those athletes.”
